15 May 2019 Structured Nutrition Therapy for Weight Loss
The first aim of medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is to encourage weight loss especially among patients with diabetes. Prof Winnie Chee, IMU’s Dean, School of Health Sciences, discussed the need of results-based MNT, the evidence of efficacy and insights on how to implement MNT in clinical practice. Chee stressed on carbohydrate counting, carbohydrates being the main food group that affects blood glucose levels and noted that protein content should be higher, as more studies are starting to show the benefits of protein towards glycaemic control. She expressed that a low-fat diet is absolutely necessary.
