26 Sep 2017 IMU Dietetics with Nutrition Faculty Gained Knowledge on Nutrition-Focused Physical Examination
The Nutrition & Dietetics team at IMU is highly motivated in lifelong learning and committed to achieving the highest standards of intellectual and educational productivity. The team is always dedicated to the pursuit of excellence through capacity and capability building to ensure growth, to build the culture of learning and to sustain the University’s ability to change and improve.
|With this in mind, a group of 14 faculty from the Dietetics with Nutrition programme enrolled in The Rutgers Nuts & Bolts of Nutrition Focused Physical Examination Online Module which was instructed by leading experts – Prof Dr Riva Touger-Decker, Associate Prof Dr Rebecca Brody and Assistant Prof Dr Jennifer A Tomesko from Rutgers University – The State University of New Jersey. This is to equip themselves with the nutrition-focused physical examination skills as integration of these skills into dietetics practice is a new paradigm in healthcare in the 21st century.|
The goal of a nutrition-focused physical examination is to identify factors that may impair patient’s dietary intake, impact nutrition status, and reflect nutrition conditions in which the dietitian is uniquely trained to identify and manage via intervention or referral. This online module was a 6-week course specifically focusing on the identification and diagnosis of malnutrition, assessment of fat, muscle wasting and functional status, orofacial and dysphagia screening. This online module ensures that the IMU dietitians are not just trained to ask, listen and talk (counsel), but also being trained to touch and diagnose.
One of the most interesting aspects of this learning was the LIVE sessions with Rutgers instructors. The Nutrition & Dietetics faculty also attended the online ZOOM meetings to observe the demonstration on nutrition-focused physical examination by the Rutgers instructors.
On 12 July 2017, A/Prof Rebecca Brody visited Malaysia and IMU to present the Certificate of Completion on The Nuts & Bolts of Nutrition Focused Physical Examination Online Module to the IMU dietitians.
