13 Nov 2018 IMU Team Won First Prize at Inter-Medical School Clinical Anatomy Competition

IMU team ATLAS represented by Shawn Yeo Shuen Kai, Choi Xian Hung, Chia Tee Hang (Semester 3 medical students) entered the final of the Inter-Medical School Clinical Anatomy Workshop / Competition along with 6 other teams (2 teams from Taylor’s University, teams from IIUM, UCSI, USM). Another team from IMU (students from ME118) also participated in the event.

In the final round with preparation time of only 45 minutes IMU team ATLAS delivered an excellent presentation and answers to Q & A and won the first position. Second position went to one of the two teams from Taylor’s University and third position went to one of the three teams from IIUM. Prizes to the winners were distributed by the President and ex-President of MAA along with A/Prof Nilesh, A/Prof Farida and Dr Htar Htar.

This competition was inaugurated by Prof Ammu, Associate Dean, School of Medicine, IMU and Prof Norzana Abd Ghafar, President MAA. In this competition, student teams were given a clinical scenario and they will make a team-presentation explaining the anatomical concepts related to the scenario and anatomical basis of the presentations in the clinical scenario.

13 teams from Faculty of Medicine of different universities participated in the competition:
2 teams from Taylor’s University
2 teams from IMU
2 teams from USM
1 team each from UCSI, UiTM, PUGSOM and USIM.

The competition was tough and time-bound (15 minutes and 5 minutes Q & A) and was judged by 9 members of Malaysian Anatomical Association (including president and ex-president of MAA).

The Inter-Medical School Clinical Anatomy Workshop / Competition was organised by IMU’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC)–Medicine along with anatomists of Human Biology Division in collaboration with Malaysian Anatomical Association (MAA) on 16 October 2018 at IMU Bukit Jalil campus.

Anatomists of IMU prepared and vetted the clinical scenarios with the help of the members of Malaysian Anatomical Association. Dean, School of Medicine, IMU conducted a lottery to randomly distribute the scenarios for the teams. SRC-Medicine appointed students ‘committee under guidance from A/Prof Nilesh Kumar, Chairperson of the Competition, meticulously arranged the registration and other arrangements with the help of Student Services Department IMU.

IMU students who participated in the competition commented that they enjoyed the competition and learn a lot from each other about how to make a presentation interactive and interact with the audience despite keeping to the depth of the subject. They also learnt the application of anatomy in different clinical contexts and disciplines.
