11 Oct 2017 The Decennium: IMU School of Dentistry Turned 10

8 – 9 September 2017 – A decade ago, a School of Dentistry was established at IMU to offer Bachelor of Dental Surgery at an undergraduate level. This year, the dental students organised an Oral Health Carnival in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the School of Dentistry. In line with the tagline of the carnival “Oral Wellness – The Focus for the Next Decennium”, the event was aimed at promoting oral health awareness among the public. The carnival also served as a platform for interaction and knowledge exchange among dental students in Malaysia.

The opening ceremony was graced by our honorable guests, Dr Ng Woan Tyng, the President of Malaysia Dental Association, along with Prof Toh Chooi Gait, IMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof Allan Pau Kah Heng, Dean of IMU School of Dentistry and Dr Sobia Bilal, Advisor of Oral Health Carnival and Prof Frederick Smales. Their presence made the event more meaningful. Guests and visitors were entertained by various wonderful performances by talented students from different schools.

There were a total of 10 fun and interactive educational and games booths set up by the students. Among the booths, the Horror House attracted the most visitors with the booth’s amazing and realistic set-up. Visitors also learnt about oral health and nutrition as well as tobacco cessation. Inter-faculty collaboration also took place in the form of free healthcare screenings to the public which involved students and faculty members from Chiropractic, Nutrition & Dietetics, Pharmacy as well as Dentistry. Besides that, there were lucky draw sessions on both days of the carnival.

Among the highlights of the carnival were the Dental Olympics competition and video competition. We received participations from IMU dental students and other dental universities such as UKM, AIMST, MAHSA, MMMC and Lincoln UC. For the Dental Olympics competition, every participant amazed the judges with their creativity in soap carving and wire bending skills. Despite the competitiveness, we would like to congratulate the IMU team from DT114 which had made it to the final round and was the overall champion in the Dental Olympics competition.

The Oral Health Carnival attracted over 370 people comprising of students, staffs and their families and the public. It would not have been successful without the commitment and dedication from all the committee members, volunteers, faculty members and sponsors.

Wishing IMU School of Dentistry a Happy 10th Anniversary and may our School continue to strive for excellence in all the years to come.
