23 Aug 2019 Twenty Teams Vied for Top Prizes at 5th IMU Science Discovery Challenge

20 July 2019 – It was the survival of the most innovative minds for the twenty teams competing in the IMU Science Discovery Challenge at the University’s campus in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. The Challenge which made science competitive yet fun for the students, saw ten teams competing for the top prize in the School Category while another ten teams competed for the top prize in the Pre-University Category.

The competition comprised of a preliminary round of an Online Quiz, the semi-finals and the finals with 3,500 students (in both School and Pre-university categories) taking part in the quiz! Out of these, the top 60 teams (3 students per team) from the School Category and 56 teams from Pre-University Category, continued their battle at the IMU campus in Bukit Jalil in the semi-finals while the finals, which was also held at the IMU campus, saw the top 20 teams answering the questions using the Kahoot platform.

As the Challenge drew to a close, the following teams were announced as the winners:

Best Chemistry Award Sekolah Menengah Tshung Tsin, Kota Kinabalu

2nd runner up SMK Tinggi, Kluang

Apart from the science challenge, there were also hands on activities and exhibitions. This year, one of the key exhibitors showcased 3D Biological Printing Technology.

About IMU Science Discovery Challenge
The annual IMU Science Challenge is open to pre-university and secondary school students with the aim of creating awareness in sciences and inspiring them to a career in healthcare through competitive activities, workshops and exhibition. This is a good platform to allow the students to have a better understanding of Science – it’s usage, potential and future. Most importantly, it aims to expose students to the fact that science is very interesting and that science related work is not just confined to laboratories! Ultimately, the objective of this event is to foster the interest of sciences among secondary school students, aligned with the initiatives by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia.
