30 May 2013 420 pledge organs during IMU MAPCU Organ Donation Campaign

13 – 16 May 2013 – A total of 420 people pledged to donate their organs during a yearlong awareness campaign organised by Malaysian University students from International Medical University (IMU). The campaign was part of the MAPCU (Malaysian Association of Private Colleges and Universities) Organ Donation Campaign 2012-2013. One of the activities for this campaign was the Organ Donation Week held at the IMU Bukit Jalil Campus where various activities such as fundraising activities and games were organised for all staff and students. A movie screening of the film ‘Seven Pounds’ was also held to show the impact of organ donations on the lives of many others.

Another event that was organised for this campaign is the Organ Donation Mall Road Show, jointly organised by the IMU students as well as students from KBU International College on 26 – 27 January 2013 at the 1Utama Shopping Centre in Bandar Utama. During this two-day event, enthusiastic students from both institutions approached passers-by at the busy mall to explain and answer questions about organ donation.

Following this event, the religious clubs of IMU (Muslim Society, Buddhist Society, Christian Fellowship, Hindu Society and Catholic Student Society) organised an Inter-religious Forum on 19 March 2013. The main topic of the forum was ‘Religious Views on Organ Donation’. Reputable speakers from the respective religions were invited to discuss organ donation from a religious perspective and to provide insight as to how to handle this as religious individuals. The event managed to clear many doubts by students and staff. President of Voice of Women and living liver donor, Ms Chew Hoong Ling, attended the forum as a special guest speaker.

While getting 420 pledgers through these events may seem insignificant to some, it is a promising first step towards an organ donation supporting nation.
