Celebrating Nurses Day at IMU

15 May 2015 – 150 people attended a Nurses Day celebration was organised by the Nursing Division of the Internatonal Medical University (IMU) in conjunction with International Nurses Day. The event was held at the University’s campus in Bukit Jalil. The theme for this year’s Nurses Day is ‘Nurses A Force for Change: Care Effective and Cost Effective’. Invited VIP guests were Matron Rosena Abd Ghani, Deputy Director of Nursing, Nursing Board Malaysia and Matron Anny Mary Joseph, Chief Matron of Federal Territory. IMU_2903IMU_2775IMU_2990 Prof Khor Geok Lin, Dean, School of Health Sciences started the event with a welcome to the audience while the keynote address was given by Malaysian Nurses Association President, Madam Mariam Madhar Ali. She stressed that the success of any health initiative will be directly influenced by the extent to which the nursing workforce is enabled to consistently practice to its fullest scope. All  registered nurses who were at the event participated in the reading of the pledge, led by Sister Chong Pek Sam from IMU. This was followed by cake cutting ceremony. There was also a choir presentation from students from International Medical College (IMC).

An interactive discussion session on ‘Nurses A Force for Change: Care Effective and Cost Effective’ was conducted. The session was moderated by Chow Shuh Hing, a nursing lecturer at IMU. Four honorable speakers for this session included Yap Sim Bee (Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Gleneagles Hospital), Dr Pathmawathi A/P Subramanian (Senior Lecturer Department of Nursing Science, Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya), Ong Bing Yook (Director of Nursing, Pantai Cheras Hospital) and Prof Dato’ Jai Mohan (Professor of Health Informatics & Pediatrics, IMU & President of the Malaysia Health Informatics Association). The speakers presented on four different aspects of approach towards care effective and cost effective: i. Ms. Yap Sim Bee on Hospital administration ii. Dr. Pathmawathi A/P Subramanian on Strategies by International Council of Nurses iii. Ong Bing Yook on Care management in hospital iv. Dato Jai Mohan on technological aspects and hospital informatics. IMU_2939 The interactive session highlighted various issues in healthcare including nurses’ role as largest number of healthcare employees in influencing change in healthcare system. Healthcare delivery and rendering safe practices aspects discussed were as follows: • Cost effectiveness such as financing, resource management, and human resource management, recruiting male nurses, Infection control issues and using health informatics in health care. • Care effectiveness such as documentation, medication errors, and communication, discharge advices, WHO hand hygiene campaign, safety campaign and Community service responsibility activities (CSR activities). At the conclusion of the event, Ms Christy Chiu Lai Heng (Executive Director, IMC) extended her appreciation and thanked all attendees. photo
